Designated dog exercise areas

Dog Management

There are four types of areas under the Dog Control Act 2000 that relate to dogs in public places. These are classed as exercise, training, restricted and prohibited.

Your dog must be on a lead at all times when it is in a public area, except when it is in a declared exercise or training area. Failure to comply will result in an infringement being issued to you under the Dog Control Act 2000.

Effective Control

When your dog is off-lead it must be under effective control at all times. A dog under effective control is:

  • in close proximity to a person;
  • in sight of the person; and
  • the person is able to demonstrate that the dog responds immediately to a person’s command.
