Rates
Derwent Valley Council has approved a 7.75 percent general rate increase for the 2026-27 financial year, as part of a comprehensive strategy to ensure the Council's long-term financial sustainability and continued service delivery to the community. Other charges have increased by varying percentages or not at all.
Your rates bill is made up of general rates and other charges.
Both the General Rate and Fire Protection Service Charge are based on each rateable property’s valuation. The valuation that Council uses to calculate rates is the ‘Assessed Annual Value’ (AAV) of the property. The AAV is determined by the Tasmanian Valuer General.
The items in your rates bill include:
- General Rate
- Fire Protection Service Charge (State Government Charge)
- Waste Management Service Charge (for rehabilitation of the Peppermint Hill Landfill Site)
- Variable Waste Management Service Charge (for properties with curbside bin collection service)
- Landfill levy (State Government Charge)
Rates are payable at the beginning of each financial year, but can be paid by instalments as listed below:
1st Instalment: 31 August 2026
2nd Instalment: 30 October 2026
3rd Instalment: 29 January 2027
4th Instalment: 31 March 2027

Receive your rates notice by email
Property owners and their authorised agent or legal representative can now register an email address and 'Opt In' to receive Rates Notices electronically and receive reminder messages via SMS. SMS reminders will be introduced in the future, but you can “Opt In” now.
With the increased cost of postage and longer delivery times, electronic delivery will be quicker, more convenient, cost effective and better for the environment. By opting in for electronic delivery of information:
- You will receive your Rates Notices as a link to an Adobe PDF sent to your nominated email address.
- You will no longer receive a physical copy by regular post.
Opt-In

- We will send a confirmation email to verify your email address. You will need to follow the link in the email to complete your registration.
- At this point in time you will need to fill out this form for each property that is owned in the Derwent Valley Council area
Direct Debit Rates
Property owners can now pay their rates by direct debit. Please complete the Direct Debit request form and send to rates@dvc.tas.gov.au or the Council offices at 1 Circle Street New Norfolk.
