Rubbish Collection

Council offers a weekly kerbside collection service for general waste, and a fortnightly recycling collection service.

Separating your waste

There is a two bin waste system operating in the Derwent Valley. Residents are asked to separate their waste into "General Waste" and "Recycling". Your property should have the following bins:

  • General Waste Bin (Green bin with Yellow lid) either 120L or 240L  - collected weekly;
  • Recycling Bin (Yellow bin with Yellow lid) either 140L or 240L collected fortnightly on the same day as your general waste bin.

Putting your bins out

To make sure your bins are emptied by Council's Waste Contractor, follow these easy steps:-

  • Leave 1 metre of space around the bin for the truck’s automatic arms to reach and empty it.
  • Make sure the wheels of the bin are nearest your property;
  • Do not park your car in front of your bin;
  • Do not place bins under trees that have overhanging branches;
  • Do not overfill your bins. Overfilled or excessively heavy bins may not be emptied. The lid should be able to close.

What day is your bin collected?

General waste is collected on either MondayTuesday or Friday depending on your location. Please refer to the maps below for your area to find out what day your collection is:

If you are unsure which area you fall into call the Customer Service Team on (03) 6261 8500 and they will be able to assist you.

Some rural and remote areas of the municipality don't have kerbside collection as their road may be too narrow or unsuitable for the trucks to turn around. These residents are not charged the waste collection charge on their rates notice.

Recycling collection occurs on a fortnightly basis on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Damaged or lost bin?

For damaged, lost or stolen bins or to request a new waste service, please complete a Waste Management Service request form and email it to dvcouncil@dvc.tas.gov.au or drop it into the Customer Service desk at Council Chambers.

WASTE MANAGEMENT CHARGE - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Waste Management Charge?

The Waste Management Charge is a charge to help cover the costs involved in the disposal of waste.It applies to all rateable land under section 93 and section 94 of the Local Government Act 1993.

The Waste Management Charge of $65.00 is in addition to the charge for your wheelie bin service.

What is the State-Wide Waste Levy?

The State-Wide Landfill Levy is a fee to offset the amount Council has to pay to the State Government under the Waste and Resource Recovery Act 2022. This levy is charged for all separately valued parcels of rateable land.

As a ratepayer, do I receive anything for this charge?

Yes, every rateable property will receive 12 Tip Vouchers attached to their annual rates notice. To redeem a Tip Voucher it must be presented to the tollbooth operator on entry to the site. The Vouchers are valid until 31 August each year.

If I don’t use the tip, why do I have to contribute towards it?

Given that most residents may need the use of waste facilities at some time, it is considered equitable that the charge apply to all properties.

Some vacant land owners and urban residents may not utilise this service, but without the contribution of every ratepayer waste services would not be able to be maintained and this would impact on the whole of the municipality.

How many Tip Vouchers will I need when I go to the tip?

This will depend on what you are taking to the tip. Each tip voucher is valued at $6.00, waste charges are signed at the tip entry gates, and are available on Council's website.

I am a tenant, can I have vouchers too?

Vouchers are provided to the property owner (who pays the rates). Tenants wishing to enquire about Tip Vouchers should contact the managing agent or landlord.

I am a tenant and the real estate/owner of property won't give me the vouchers they received?

Providing Tip Vouchers to tenants is at the discretion of property owner/agent and not something that the Council can assist with. This will need to be discussed with them.

I am concerned with the increases this year that I will not be able to pay my rates.

If you have concerns about paying your rates on or before the due date, you may wish to apply for a payment arrangement with the Council.Payment Arrangement application forms are available from the Council Customer Service Desk or downloaded here.
