Ellis Dean Reserve Masterplan

About Ellis Dean Reserve Masterplan

This masterplan delivers on recommendation 98 of the Recreation Play and Open Space Strategy, May 2020.

In 2024 Council engaged award-winning architects PlayStreet to develop a new vision for the New Norfolk skate park, known as Ellis Dean Reserve, located on Blair Street. The design process involved two rounds of extensive community consultation, and engaged local primary and high schools, youth and family groups, residents, community organisations and adjacent landowners/tenants. The resulting masterplan reflects the community’s deep appreciation of this facility, and desire to see it significantly enhanced for the benefit of local youth and the township generally.

This vision sees Ellis Dean Reserve remain Derwent Valley’s only recreation space specifically created for older children and youth. Skateboarding remains a key feature. It aims to provide safe space for a range of programmed and self-directed activity - from quiet contemplation, to socialising, sport and events. It provides opportunity for service organisations to ‘pop-up’ at Ellis Dean Reserve and offer services (e.g. free before school breakfast club), activities (e.g. holiday programs) and entertainment (e.g. outdoor movie nights). It provides for public toilets, more bins, picnic tables and chairs, accessibility-compliant pathways, trees and hardy vegetation to increase shade and beautify the environment. It preserves and extends an existing memorial to Daniel Morcombe and Derwent Valley victims of homicide, and holds potential for public art commissions.
