The State Government has, for some years, been facing calls from environmental interests to enact legislation to control the keeping of cats in the state. Interested parties and stakeholders (councils, government agencies and animal welfare groups) have been meeting to determine the basic form such legislation might take.

Whilst it is generally recognised that some control may assist in reducing feral cat populations, most Councils are hesitant to introduce change in the absence of a state wide policy or legislation. Council refers all feline enquiries on to the Cats Home or RSPCA.

As such, Council does not respond to calls for collecting cats.
