Noise Regulations

Noise has become an increasingly significant environmental issue.  The quality of the acoustic environment may affect our work, leisure and sleep.  Noise nuisance and deterioration of the acoustic environment need to be prevented.  The sources of noise are many: industry, transport, amplified music and others.  Different means are required to address problems from each of these sources.

Restrictions on neighbourhood noise are prescribed in the Environmental Management and Pollution Control (Miscellaneous Noise) Regulations 2016.*

The existing regulations contain provisions on "neighbourhood" noise sources such as off-road vehicles, lawn mowers, power tools and heat pumps.  The Regulations are implemented by Derwent Valley Council or Tasmania Police.

For further information please go to EPA Tasmania, Environment Protection Authority.
